True story. On the way to Barnes and Noble yesterday, Evelyn asked me how much the government was going to pay to help the economy. “Well, honey,” I said, “it is going to cost 787 billion dollars but it will not work.” Markus, age 6, sitting in the back seat, said, “Dad, are they going to take money out of your savings account?” “Well, sort of, son, now that you put it that way,” I responded amidst my laughter. “It is called higher taxes to pay for the stimulus bill.” Markus responds, “Is Obama going to come to our door to get the money?” I said, “Well, sort of, son now that you put it that way. It is called legalized plunder or stealing or the IRS.” Evelyn and Sabrina, trying to sort out the whole tax idea, ask, “Dad, you mean you have to pay the government to earn money?” Well, sort of, now that you put it that way . . .
